Did you know that……….
The first team had several sponsors throughout the years. In 1979 it was the estate agents GRECH ALEXANDER to sponsor the towelling jackets. Anton Gambina was a close friend (he still is) of the Grech family Alex and his three children Marc, Chris and Sarah. These jackets were worn in Rome on the team’s first ever visit in June of that year. Later Adrian Farrugia managed to obtain sponsorships from Tessons Ltd and on our gowns we sported the logo of MILKANA even though we were not allowed to add the name of the product to club name.
Exiles CAPTAIN MORGAN CRUISES was the name of the team in 1983. It was the first time clubs were allowed to include the name of their sponsor; Exiles were the first team in Malta to make use of this opportunity to partly ‘repay’ the sponsor by giving more exposure in the media This relationship lasted for two seasons before Messrs AW Said & Co Ltd the distributors of DUCKHAMS products stepped into the role as one of the main financial backers. Francis Pace Lupi (ex goalkeeper and Committee member) was the contact person in luring this new sponsorship agreement that lasted for four seasons ending in1988.
In 1990, David Formosa Ltd agents for ESSO products came to the rescue with a year’s contract after in the previous season when Exiles won the league, no official sponsorship was obtained. Another first for local waterpolo was when patches showing the logo of Esso were stuck to the waterpolo caps. This idea was eventually taken up by most of he affiliated clubs.
A year later M Demajo Group importers of MALIBU took over for what was considered as a long relationship lasting up to 1996. The connection with the Demajo family has been bonded since the inception of the club in 1967; somehow or other this company is always ready to give a helping hand. Exiles LUCOZADE SPORT was the name of the team for two seasons when in 1997 and 1998 the team participated in the first Division. Karol Farrugia had made the contacts with Michael Curmi of Alfred Gera & Sons Ltd.
From 1999 onwards Exiles’ main sponsor was RMF Ltd. Sandro Bruno a former Committee Member managed to get this agreement that lasted up to last season.
This means that for 2006, Exiles have yet to sign e new sponsorship agreement. There are feelers and I am sure that in the end we will manage.
Any takers out there?????? |
